The most important aspect of projects is planning and sticking to deadlines. We all had multiple courses which we are following in parallel, but delaying your own work can often affect other people in your group because of dependencies. Furthermore, communication is a crucial requirement to be able to make sure we understand each other. In some cases during this project, people were working on their parts with different ideas in mind, this caused us to have to make new decisions and adapt while this would not have been necessary if we had communicated more effectively.

We wish to have started earlier and faster at the beginning, having chosen our final idea in week 3/4 handicapped the progress we were going to be able to make. Because of this, some goals that would be achievable in the 8 weeks we had were not achieved and our final prototype is not as good as we hoped it would be.

The most enjoyable part of this project was working towards and having a prototype at the end which summarised our work. Having a prototype of a product we have been working on for 7 weeks is very satisfying.

*What was the least enjoyable part of this project? Please explain why
The least enjoyable part of the project was the presentations at the end. This is not because they were not interesting, but sitting in a room for 4 hours can be very tiresome and it would have been better if only 2 of the hours had to be attended. This, however, means that we would see half as many projects.

After the kick-off - Week 1

  • What are you expecting to learn during the Robots course?

Our expectations for this course are to expand our knowledge of the user, society and enterprise issues that surround robotics. We don't expect to fully produce the product which will be manufacturable but to learn about the process that has to be taken in order to reach that state. Learn about whether a product would be worth making depending on the market and on how beneficial and useful it is for our users. Furthermore, we have to investigate the ethical impact of the robotic device and how and why it might not be easy to bring it forward. Since this group is an OGO we expect to further our cooperation skills as well as learn from each other's experiences in the various domains.

  • What kind of coaching do you expect?

The coaching will be more of a general guidance and feedback session, which will let us know if we are completely off the track. It will not be telling us exactly what to do and when to have it done by.

  • What kind of coaching would you prefer?

We would like the coaches to let us know when we are going severely off topic, but not to intervene in all the work we do.

  • What will the coaches expect of you?

The coaches expect to be updated on the current state of our work, the issues we encounter and various interesting findings we encounter.

After the first tutor meeting - Week 2

  • What is the most interesting thing you learned in the coaching meeting of the previous week and why?

What we were focussing on were robotic ideas that were innovative and sounded interested, however, we were then told that an important criterion for our idea was that it should solve a problem, and although some of our ideas did, they weren't particularly problem centred.

  • How did you incorporate coaches' feedback of the previous meeting in your project?

We therefore, came up with 5 new ideas that would help people in various ways and elaborated on how they would help them.

  • What new activities did you undertake during this week? What did you learn from these activities?

We focussed on finding ideas and grading them.

  • What did you do to prepare for next week's meeting?

We prepared a small presentation explaining what we had done.

After the second tutor meeting - Week 3

  • What is the most interesting thing you learned in the coaching meeting of the previous week and why?

The tutors said we had to choose one of the ideas we had, we were aware that we were running late and were told we were to hurry if we wanted to succeed.

  • How did you incorporate coaches' feedback of the previous meeting in your project?

We chose one idea, the virtual mirror, after grading all of the ideas.

  • What new activities did you undertake during this week? What did you learn from these activities?

We looked at the stakeholders of each subsection of our idea as well as how it would impact the users, society and enterprises.

  • What did you do to prepare for next week's meeting?

We summarized all our findings in order to be able to explain everything concisely as possible.

After the third tutor meeting - Week 4

  • What is the most interesting thing you learned in the coaching meeting of the previous week and why?

The tutors told us our idea and work was too broad and that they wanted a product and a prototype or at least something to show at the final deadline. We were also warned that we had a lot of work to do in order to catch up on the time missed.

  • How did you incorporate coaches' feedback of the previous meeting in your project?

We, therefore, decided to make a decision on the same day of the tutor meeting itself. We decided on the hairdresser's virtual representation. And went did extra work to catch up.

  • What new activities did you undertake during this week? What did you learn from these activities?

Different members worked on different ideas and parts of the project. Louis created a user survey in order to find the priorities and important aspects of our product according to everyday users and professional users. Bas started learning the 3D modelling application Maya in order to give a 3D representation at the final presentation. Rens looked for ways in which we could actually go from pictures taken from a person to the 3D representation of these pictures. Joelle worked on the laws and ethics of our product in order to be aware of the dangers and requirements for our product. Clara worked on the RPC (Requirements, Preferences and Constraints) of the product as well as working on the planning.

  • What did you do to prepare for next week's meeting?

In order to prepare for the meeting we met prior to it to discuss each other's progress, potential questions we had for the tutor as well.

After the fourth tutor meeting - Week 5

  • What is the most interesting thing you learned in the coaching meeting of the previous week and why?

We were progressing well and need to keep up the pace we're at. Our final idea is now good and we should keep working on it.

  • How did you incorporate coaches' feedback of the previous meeting in your project?

Everyone continued their work on the various topics they were busy with.

  • What new activities did you undertake during this week? What did you learn from these activities?

The app prototype has been improved further developed.

  • What did you do to prepare for next week's meeting?

We met beforehand to discuss each other's issues and progress such that we can make sure we have a clear idea of the different aspects we want to discuss during the meeting.

After the fifth tutor meeting - Week 6

  • What is the most interesting thing you learned in the coaching meeting of the previous week and why?

It's important to have a link between the use of apps by the user and the hairdressers. In order to do this, we can store data for the users which only they have access to, and which they can then share for a limited period of time with the hairdresser during their appointment. The hairdressers are then able to receive the information on their own device and manipulate or customize the hair on their version with the user/customer. Furthermore, we were told that new laws were going to be put in place in regards to privacy. This is important because our product might be affected by these new laws and thus they may directly concern us.

  • How did you incorporate coaches' feedback of the previous meeting in your project?

We have started incorporating this idea in the product we are working with, however, due to time constraints, it is unlikely to be done for the prototype and thus will be added to a future version. In addition, we have researched the privacy laws that will be added.

  • What new activities did you undertake during this week? What did you learn from these activities?

Various steps have been taken towards the finalization of the prototype as well as the wiki itself. This includes:

  1. Added customizability for the application
  2. Various hairstyles additions
  3. Finalization of the planning
  4. Analysis of survey results
  • What did you do to prepare for next week's meeting?

We met beforehand to discuss each other's issues and progress such that we can make sure we have a clear idea of the different aspects we want to discuss during the meeting.

After the final presentation - Week 7

  • What are the major steps of the project? Please list
  1. Coming up with ideas that serve as a solution to a current problem.
  2. Defining the idea and its users. Find the relevant state of the art literature to better understand the current state of said idea.
  3. Plan what we have to achieve and set deadlines for each task.
  4. Accomplish tasks and listen to tutor feedback.
  5. Present idea and finish up the wiki/report.
  • What is the most important thing you learned in this project? (e.g .about design or working in groups, etc)

  • What do you wish you had spent more time on or done differently?

We wish to have started earlier and faster at the beginning, having chosen our final idea in week 3/4 handicapped the progress we were going to be able to make. Because of this, some goals that would be achievable in the 8 weeks we had were not achieved and our final prototype is not as good as we hoped it would be.

  • What was the most enjoyable part of this project? Please explain why

The most enjoyable part of this project was working towards and having a prototype at the end which summarised our work. Having a prototype of a product we have been working on for 7 weeks is very satisfying.

  • What was the least enjoyable part of this project? Please explain why

The least enjoyable part of the project was the presentations at the end. This is not because they were not interesting, but sitting in a room for 4 hours can be very tiresome and it would have been better if only 2 of the hours had to be attended. This, however, means that we would see half as many projects.
